PUERTO RICO TIP-OFF

SPECIAL FEATURE

A FEW GOOD MEN

It’s quite possibly that a player (not mentioned here) will make the O’Reilly Auto Parts Puerto Rico Tip-Off his coming-out party. But here are 8 can’t-miss prospects.

By Jason Woullard

Prior to the inaugural O’Reilly Auto Parts Puerto Rico Tip-Off, Arkansas’ Patrick Beverley talked big, saying the Razorbacks would run the table. While Beverley’s play earned him All-Tournament accolades, it was Miami that claimed the top prize, led by Most Outstanding Player, Jack McClinton. As of this story, nobody has offered any Beverley-like guarantees—but you can take our word that these are the players whose play will speak for themselves:

Derrick Brown | 6’8”, 225 | junior, forward
School: XAVIER

Claim to Fame: The Musketeers’ top returning scorer (10.9 ppg) is also the team leader in rebounding (6.5 rpg) and field goal percentage (.609) and was a major contributor helping Xavier earn a trip to the Elite 8.

Outlook:  With Josh Duncan and Drew Lavender gone, Brown will be a marked man in the Atlantic 10. The athletic, left-handed forward will continue his knack for cleaning the glass, as evidenced by a 16-rebound performance in the opening round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament against BYU.

DeMarre Carroll | 6’8”, 225 | senior, forward
School: MISSOURI

Claim to Fame: Named the Big 12 Conference's Newcomer of the Year by both the coaches and the media while averaging 13.0 ppg and a team-leading 6.7 rebounds. Carroll also finished fourth in the league in field goal percentage (.536), ninth in rebounding and 17th in scoring.

Outlook: Noted for his blue-collar play in the paint, Carroll will anchor a Missouri team that will return four of five starters. His relentless work ethic will serve as a key component for a team that brings a Top 25 recruiting class to Columbia.

DeMar DeRozan | 6’6”, 200 | freshman, guard
School: USC

Claim to Fame: A Parade First Team All-American, DeRozan averaged 29.3 ppg and grabbed 7.9 rebounds while attending Compton High School in Los Angeles. He is rated the eighth overall prospect in the country by ESPN 100 rankings.

Outlook: Being surrounded by a group of tested veterans should ease the pressure for the young prodigy, however expectations are high again even with the departure of NBA lottery pick O.J. Mayo. While DeRozan is expected to delivery right away, his talent and athleticism may prove to be the missing piece to this already talented Trojan squad.

Nicchaeus Doaks | 6’7”, 235 | senior, forward
School: CHATTANOOGA

Claim to Fame: An All-So-Con selection leading the Mocs in rebounding (7.1), blocks (36), and field goal percentage (.588) in addition to being the team’s leading scorer in conference play at 14.9 ppg.

Outlook: Arguably the best big man returning to the So-Con.  Doaks is the second leading returning rebounder in the conference, which helped the Mocs finish 18th in the country in that category last season. Paired with fellow all-conference performer Stephen McDowell, Chattanooga may be poised for their biggest breakout yet.

Tyreke Evans | 6’5”, 205 | freshman, guard
School: MEMPHIS

Claim to Fame: A three-time state player of the year, Evans averaged 29 ppg as a high school senior and capped it off with a 21-point, 10-rebound performance earning MVP honors in the McDonald's High School All-American game.

Outlook: Touted as the next freshman superstar phenom, Evans replaces NBA No. 1 draft pick Derrick Rose as a featured player in John Calipari’s up-tempo offense. With an uncanny flair for the scoring, Evans will assert himself as the leader of a team that is poised to make another run deep into the Tournament.

Jonathan Han | 6’0”, 160 | senior, guard
School: FAIRFIELD

Claim to Fame: Earned second team All-MAAC honors last season, leading the conference in assists (6.2), which ranked 14th among the nation’s elite. His 11.7 ppg and 50 steals were also good for a team best.

Outlook: Emerged as one of the nation’s top floor generals last season playing nearly every minute of each game (38.3 mpg). This season, Han will direct a team that returns a starter at each position.

Eugene Harvey | 6’0”, 165, | junior, guard
School: SETON HALL

Claim to Fame: The Bob Cousy Award candidate is the top returning scorer (13.3 ppg) and assists man (4.8), which ranked fourth among conference leaders. Finished second in the Big East in minutes per game (36.8) and third in steals (1.94).

Outlook: Figures to be one of the top point guards in the Big East. In addition to setting the table for his teammates, he will also have to help fill the scoring void left by All-Big East performer Brian Laing. Posting a career-high 27 points on three occasions last season shows he is up to the task.

A.D. Vassallo | 6’6”, 213 | senior, forward/guard
School: VIRGINIA TECH

Claim to Fame: The second team All-ACC performer (and Puerto Rico native) who led Virginia Tech in scoring (16.9 ppg), and minutes played (34.3) last season finished in the conference top 10 in scoring, field goal percentage and three-point shooting.

Outlook:  Even with nearly the entire squad returning, Vassallo will be the No. 1 option in the Hokie offense. The sixth leading scorer in the ACC continues to improve his average by nearly 5 points each year, thus foreshadowing a possible 20-plus per-night outing for the upcoming season.
